Start of the Orchard Industry

We would like to add information on the history of the fruit industry in Hampshire County. However, it will depend on what our citizens send us. We are looking for photographs, articles and artifacts to photograph that are part of this history. Without your help this information will disappear.

Mr. Gilbert Proctor Miller is credited with planting the first commercial orchard in Hampshire County in1890. Soon after he started several other large orchards were planted and small farmers began to plant smaller orchards. The plaque below was in Ned Miller's home on Wirgman Lane in Romney when he died; we do not know its original location.
