Cheryl Harmison Singhal
from the South Branch Intelligencer 1867-1879
and the Hampshire Review 1884-1886
We are honored to be able to provide here the newspaper personal items from the South Branch Intelligencer for the years 1867-1879 and from the Hampshire Review for 1884-1886. These listings were the work of Cheryl Harmison Singhal formerly of Hampshire County and more recently of Silver Spring, Maryland. Cheryl passed away in January 2015. Cheryl's husband was kind enough to allow us permission to use her files to make her work available to researchers. She had spent untold hours at a microfilm machine transcribing information which is a valuable resource not only to genealogists, but also the general history scholars.
Although most of the information pertains to marriages and deaths, both this information and the other articles give valuable insight into the life of the community. Certainly, they point out family relationships, but they also point out relationships among friends and neighbors. Additionally, they tell us something about life and death in the community. The word search allows us to see how often horse and carriage wrecks or train mishaps affected the members of the community, killing some and maiming others. They give insight into how often people move within or into or out of the community. All these tidbits add richness to our picture of community life in this time period.
You may enter a single word or two or three words into the search box below. If you enter two words it will search not only for that particular group, but also for each of the individual words. If you include the term "and" between two words the search will return only the lines where both words appear. You may also search for a month and year of publication - not a date. All searches are case insensitive.
Disclaimer: please note that this information is manually transcribed from old, scratched microfilm and then is converted to a database for searching. There will be mistakes. We have no way of proofing this data against the original documents. That is the researchers responsibility!
