North River Mills -
Ice Mountain Day
Saturday, May 31, 2008

Check back for more information as it becomes available - if it becomes available;
we are famous for the spontaneity of our events, so planning is not a big thing with us.
Folks usually gather around 10 a.m. and the fun goes on towards about 4 p.m. or just whenever.....
Of course, there will be a rain shower on the last trip up Ice Mountain; it happens every year.
Bring your musical instrument, your walking shoes & some friends and come join the fun.

Each year the Bailes in cooperation with the Nature Conservancy
brings you a delightful day of
peace, quiet, great music, gentle breezes, nature tours
history tours, fun, food and fellowship in the
North River Mills - Ice Mountain Day Festival

We present here photos from past N.R.M. Day.

music on the porch

The day began with a special gathering of musicians on the porch of the Miller house led by Wilmer Kerns, the eminent historian of Frederick and Hampshire Counties.

flat foot dancing

This year we had an unusual addition to the musical festivities with a demonstration of Appalachian Flat Foot Dancing given by Charlie Burton of Harmony, Pennsylvania.
genealogists searching

Of course, there were the genealogists looking for their ancestors and making new friends during their search.  If you find any lost ancestors wandering around, please let us know.
Horse interview

BattleJack gave his usual interview to admiring fans and explained the blessedness of living in North River Mills. He, of course, is the only permanent resident.
3D map of the area

Another new and very interesting addition to our usual history displays was a three dimensional map of the North River Mills area constructed by Buck O'Brien, a local resident and model maker. This map is based on the topographical maps and is a wonderful way to get a better understanding of the villages situation in relation to the river and to the mountains. The Society thanks Buck for sharing this wonderful display.
snapping turtle

This snapping turtle was found by a visitor along the road not far from the Miller house and provided a great sense of the abundance of our wildlife.

wagon ride tour of the village

And there was the lovely Wagon ride through the village.

learning to dance flat foot style

As the afternoon wore on, some folks were caught up in the lure of the intriguing Appalachian Flat Foot dancing and decided to take some lessons. What a way to stay young.

Our incredibly wonderful day ended with the proverbial
settin' on the porch with some pluckin' and strummin' and singing.

Our Thanks to all who came to participate and make
this another great Day in our delightful village!!!

We regret that the webmaster has no photos of the Nature Conservancy's
tour of Ice Mountain but no docent has offered to carry him up the mountain.
We do plan in the future to add a special section on Ice Mountain tours
if we can get this transportation problem solved.

A special thanks to Terry and Steve Bailes
and the O'Briens and Roses and everyone else who worked
so hard to make this day such an hospitable event.
